Other Patient Experience-Adult Inpatient Measures

Discharge Information

What are we measuring and why?

As part of a survey about their experience at Massachusetts General Hospital, hospital patients are asked the following two questions about the discharge instructions they received:

  • During your hospital stay, did hospital staff talk with you about whether you would have the help you needed when you left the hospital?
  • During your hospital stay, did you get information in writing about what symptoms or health problems to look out for after you left the hospital?

This information helps us better understand patients’ perceptions of the instructions provided by MGH staff and identify ways to improve.

How are we doing and how do we compare to best practice?

Ninety-three percent (92%) of MGH inpatients indicated that MGH staff always provided adequate information, support, and instructions when it was time to leave, exceeding the national average of 85% and a Massachusetts state average of 87% (Oct 12-Sept 13, reporting for both). Although MGH excels in this area, we continue to focus on how best to send our patients home with complete information for maximum comfort.

What can you do?

If you have questions about your care as you or a family member are leaving MGH, please raise them to your care providers.  The staff will be glad to review and explain any necessary discharge orders or information.
