Other Patient Experience-Adult Inpatient Measures

Recommendation

What are we measuring and why?

As part of a survey about their experience at Massachusetts General Hospital, inpatients who received medical, surgical, or obstetric care are asked whether they would recommend the hospital to their friends and family. This information provides us with additional insight into the experience that patients have with us.

How are we doing and how do we compare to best practice?

Eighty-nine percent of MGH inpatients indicated that they would definitely recommend MGH to their friends and family. This rate exceeds the current CMS national average of 68 percent and the Massachusetts State average of 71 percent. MGH has been surveying patients about their experiences routinely for more than a decade and we typically score very highly on these bottom-line or summary measures. Our improvement efforts are directed at more specific aspects of the patients’ experience.
