2017 Joint Commission Survey Results

A MESSAGE FROM PETER L. SLAVIN, MD, MGH PRESIDENT, TO THE MGH COMMUNITY

Dear Colleagues:

The survey team from The Joint Commission – the independent nonprofit that accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States – has completed its five-day (November 13 to 17, 2017) assessment of the MGH. The survey team spent an equivalent of 35 days here, examining our patient care areas, outpatient practices and facilities. I thank all of you who welcomed the surveyors and took time from your daily work to demonstrate the excellent care we provide.

Surveyors were generous with their praise of our organization – the staff, facilities and the care we give our patients. “Extraordinary,” “superb,” and “best I’ve seen” were just a few of the phrases we heard from surveyors. More than once, they called an MGH process a “best practice.”

Though we were praised for so much of what the surveyors saw during their time here, they have identified some areas where they believe we can improve.

2017 Joint Commission Summary

While we go into each survey hoping for zero findings, it is important to remember that the survey is not meant to be a pat on the back, but a learning opportunity. In the closing, the survey leader said it was a pleasure to lead the team this week and called Mass General a “wonderful place.” I thank everyone for their efforts this week, and of course, for practicing Excellence Every Day.

Sincerely,

Peter L. Slavin, MD
